Weymouth School Committee Selects Assistant Superintendent Rob Wargo as Next Superintendent

March 22, 2021

School Committee members voted unanimously to select Assistant Superintendent Rob Wargo as the new Superintendent of Schools during a special meeting Saturday morning.

“Mr. Wargo is an admirable selection, and I am confident he will continue to move Weymouth Public Schools forward,” Mayor Bob Hedlund said. “Hiring a Superintendent is one of the most critical roles of the School Committee,” School Committee Chair, Lisa Belmarsh added.  “It is a testament to his proven leadership in our district that this was a unanimous decision.”

Rob Wargo is currently the Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services and Support in the Weymouth Public Schools.  Prior to coming to Weymouth, he had served as the Principal in Scituate High School and at King Philip High School.  Mr. Wargo has held a number of positions in education and school administration including Dean of Students, Athletic Director, guidance counselor, and PE/health teacher.

“I would like to thank the search committee for their efforts, and the School Committee for selecting me as the next Superintendent,” Rob Wargo said. “I look forward to continuing the great work the district has started, and sharing all the positive contributions from within our schools with the community. I am fortunate to know Weymouth Public Schools is made up of an incredible team, and look forward to continuing to work alongside dedicated building and central office administrators.”

Mr. Wargo has a masters in School Counseling from Northeastern University, and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Maryland.

“This was an incredibly collaborative process with multiple avenues for input and participation by the community, families, students and staff,” Belmarsh said. “The Collins center provided excellent guidance to the screening committee and School Committee.  I am confident that our efforts over the last four months will elevate Weymouth’s education even more. Mr. Wargo’s experience combined with his professionalism and character makes him a tremendous selection."

“The selection committee put forth a talented pool of candidates, and I would like to congratulate each of them for doing an excellent job throughout the interview process,” Mayor Bob Hedlund added.

The selection came after a preliminary screening committee of 17 members vetted over thirty candidates, interviewed 10, and selected 4 candidates to put forth to the School Committee for individual interviews over the last week.

Pending contract negotiations, Wargo will assume the role of Superintendent this summer, following a transition period working with Interim Superintendent of Schools Kathleen Smith.

“I look forward to working with Assistant Superintendent Rob Wargo in the coming months to prepare him for his role as the next Superintendent,” Interim Superintendent Kathleen Smith said.  “In my time here working with Mr. Wargo he has demonstrated he possesses the intrinsic characteristics and leadership qualities any district would be fortunate to find in a Superintendent.  I look forward to the remainder of our time working together, I am confident he will be a tremendous asset to Weymouth Public Schools for many years to come.”
