Backpack Program  

Mission of the Backpack Program: 
to support the social, academic, emotional, and nutritional wellbeing of WPS students. The program provides students in need with kid-friendly, nutritious meals in a backpack every Friday, a food supply to last the weekend.
 
History of the Backpack Program: 
The Backpack Program was created by AAMS staff members Kathleen Lyon-Mahoney and Marissa Matta, who began the program after noticing an increase of students being hungry during the school day, especially Mondays. They partnered with the Weymouth Food Pantry, identified students of need and began the work! Later that year they created a manual on how to start your own backpack program, with information on fundraising, voluteer retention and recruitment, and logistics. 
 
How does this help WPS students? 

The program provides students in need with kid-friendly, nutritious meals in a backpack every Friday, a food supply to last the weekend, and what we've learned is its impact is exponential. Data indicated providing students with food every weekend led to improved attendance and a positive impact on academics. By decreasing academic stress we can support our students’ mental health and well-being, and decrease their likelihood of developing anxiety or depressi

How do families apply for the BP? What is the criteria? The BP is availale to everyone at Weymouth Public Schools.  To enroll, contact the main office at your school.
