Message to Families - April 30, 2021

Dear Weymouth School Community,

It’s official, we’ve welcomed back all our schools to five day in-person instruction!

As a district, over 80% of our students have selected to return to in-person instruction.  I had the pleasure of visiting many schools this week, and seeing first hand the excitement that came with  student drop off. Our students came off the bus happy and safely socializing with their friends. Our principals, teachers, and staff are thrilled to have students back in their classrooms once again.  We know we’re not through this challenging time yet, but it feels like the light is beginning to shine in.

With the end of the school year approaching we will continue to work with our community boosters, parent councils and community organizations that support our students in preparing special end of the year activities throughout the district.  We are all working together to ensure these activities are done in the safest way possible.

These events, and all school activities for the remainder of this school year, will require wearing a mask regardless of any changes related to mask mandates made by the state. We are working diligently to keep students in school buildings for the rest of the school year.  End of the year events and activities are important, and will be observed safely and cautiously, with our masks on and our guard up.

This year the Special Olympics games will be held both virtually and in person, beginning Tuesday.  I’d like to congratulate all our Special Olympics athletes for their participation.  We look forward to having everyone together on the fields to celebrate our olympians next year.

This coming week we are also recognizing Children’s Mental Health Awareness from May 2nd - May 8th.  Mental health is a critical piece to supporting our students and families.  We strive to provide education about the impact of mental wellbeing, promote the importance of mental wellness and self-care, and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health.  Weymouth Public Schools will offer opportunities all week for students to learn about and engage in conversations related to mental wellness.  Tips and resources for parents are available through a virtual Caregiver Resource Fair on Thursday, May 6th at 6PM.

We would like to encourage all our students and families to show their support for Children’s Mental Health Awareness by wearing green, a sign of growth and resilience, on Friday, May 7th.  You can share your photos on social media with the hashtag #WPS4MentalHealthAwareness.

In closing, thank you to our entire school community for your continued partnership.  We can’t thank our community enough for the enormous effort that went into overcoming the monumental challenges this year.  Please join us throughout the month of May as we offer our appreciation to all the amazing people involved with Weymouth Public Schools, and don’t forget to give yourself a pat on the back!

Thank you,
Kathleen Smith, JD
