Homeschooling in Weymouth

Weymouth Public Schools is committed to ensuring that every child residing in the Town of Weymouth receives a high-quality education. As such, we must be informed about the educational setting of all students living within the district, whether they attend public, private, or charter schools, online academies, or are home-schooled.

For families who choose homeschooling as an option for their children, WPS ensures that students’ educational needs are met and that proper procedures are followed. Please review Weymouth School Committee Policy IHBG (Home Schooling) and IHBG-R (Home Schooling.)

Homeschooling Application Process

To begin homeschooling your child, please complete and submit the following information to the Superintendent’s Office (located at 89 Middle Street, Weymouth, in the Abigail Adams building.)

This process must be completed every year, annually, and must be completed 14 days prior to the start of home schooling. Please note that students who are homeschooled through 12th grade will not be eligible to receive a Weymouth Public Schools diploma.

  • Complete the WPS Application for Home Education Program. The application will ask you to provide:
    • A detailed academic plan outlining your child’s curriculum and learning goals.
    • Information regarding background, experience, and/or qualifications of those who will be instructing the child(ren.)
    • Planned methods of assessment to evaluate your child’s progress.

Instructional Hours

We ask families considering homeschooling to be aware of the minimum instructional hours required for homeschooled students:

  • Elementary School (Grades K-5): Homeschooled students must receive at least 900 hours of instruction per academic year.
  • Secondary School (Grades 6-12): Homeschooled students must receive at least 990 hours of instruction per academic year.

Notification of Changes

If your homeschooling plans change and you choose, instead, to enroll your student in an online academy, private school, or charter school, please notify the WPS Superintendent’s office.

For more information or questions about homeschooling in Weymouth, please contact the WPS Superintendent's office at 781-335-1460.
