WEYMOUTH SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING

REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT:
Superintendent Curtin thanked the Town Council Education Subcommittee, and Councilors Palazzo, Sherlock-Shangraw, Mathews, Happel, and DiFazio, Senator O’Connor, www.weymouthschools.org and the Mayor for discussing the budget and their help in understanding what is happening at the local, state, and federal level. The Mayor’s budget will be presented to the Town Council on April 21, 2026.
The half day professional development on 4/7/26 reviewed K-5 math standards. Illustrative Math will be piloted. De-escalation, support for multilingual learners, augmentative and alternative communication, safety care training as well as curriculum assessment were professional development offerings.
The survey for the strategic plan has been sent out to staff, students, and parents. Over 1700 responses have already been received. The survey will be open for another week and will help in building the strategic plan with focus areas and core values.
Thanks were conveyed to SEPAC for hosting the Resource Fair; an opportunity to provide resources and for families to connect.
Congratulations were expressed to the Robotics Team for being awarded the ‘Engineering Inspiration Award’ at the Billerica competition. The team qualified for the NE Championship.
Assistant Superintendent Smith gave an update on Ralph Talbot Street safety. The School administration has collaborated with WPD, DOT, School Transportation, School Maintenance, Town Departments, Principal Day, and Ralph Talbot Parent Council. Safety concerns voiced:
- Excessive snow removal
- Road Work at Ralph Talbot and Pleasant St in the spring
- Ralph Talbot School located on a state road (40mph, 20mph during school hours)
DOT looked at the area, crosswalks and signage. In the spring reconstruction of sidewalks/curbs, and installation of necessary signage, high visibility crosswalks (rectangular rapid flashing beacons) will begin. Thanks expressed to WPD for conducting traffic enforcement. Principal Day is constantly communicating with families. WETC is also running PSAs. Further updates will be provided.
Discussion of Traffic Supervisors and training (state and Weymouth) was had.
Ms. Dickerman expressed thanks to Eric Dresser and the Ralph Talbot Parent Council for their advocacy work.
OLD BUSINESS
a. Kindergarten, Here I come (action requested) - Chair Nardone
An agenda item at the request of Ms. Dickerman who suggested that the committee have a table at the Kindergarten, Here I Come event. Discussion was had on the purpose of the table, equity of having a table, and open meeting law.
Motion by Ms. Graziano seconded by Ms. Devine for the School Committee not to host a table at the Kindergarten, Here I Come event. Motion passed 4-2 (No-Dickerman, McClean)
NEW BUSINESS
a. Collective Bargaining Report - Chair Nardone
There was a meeting today and negotiations are lively, friendly and ongoing. Ms. Devine shared that SEIU 888 Custodians met Tuesday and negotiations are progressing nicely. Ms. Graziano advised the AFSCME Traffic Supervisors met on 3/27 and negotiations are going great and the next meeting is on 4/17.
The next meeting for SEIU Maintenance is on April 30. A meeting with Van Drivers and Monitors will be scheduled soon.
b. Student Handbooks: First Reading - Asst. Superintendent Lindsey Fratolillo, Ms. Karen Monahan, Ms. Malissa Northup, Ms. Karen Bonner
Assistant Superintendent Fratolillo shared that the elementary handbook will be revised to include PreK.
Ms. Monahan, Ms. Northup, and Ms. Bonner reviewed additions and changes (attached to these minutes) for the Student Handbook.
Discussion was had on cell phone use, attendance, artificial intelligence, and in school suspension. All questions by the committee were addressed.
Student Handbooks will be moved to a second reading where the community will have an opportunity for public comment.
c. Weymouth High School Program of Studies: First Reading - Ms. Karen Monahan & Ms. Malissa Northup
Ms. Monahan, Ms. Northup, and Ms. Bonner summarized changes (attached to these minutes) for the Student Handbook.
With the budget uncertain, there are limited changes. A pause will be taken for the fiscal year and a different approach will be taken next year with additional changes/revisions.
The Superintendent extended thanks to Principal Monahan for her work on the Early College Pathways program.
Program of Studies will be moved to a second reading.

Voiced concern for pedestrian safety at the Ralph Talbot School and emphasized that Traffic Supervisors be equipped with the best possible training, equipment and support.
