Pursuant to Chapter 2 of the Acts of 2025, this meeting will be conducted in person and, as a courtesy, via remote means in accordance with applicable law, extending the provisions originally outlined in Chapter 2 of the Acts of 2023. WEYMOUTH SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING

The meeting was called to order at 7:00pm
The Chair informed that the meeting is being recorded and available on WETC.
Mrs. Nardone led in the Pledge of Allegiance. Moments of Silence were observed belatedly for WPS educators Elizabeth ‘Bethann’ Reilly and also for Charles ‘Chuck’ Aubut.

Motion by Dr. Sherlock-Shangraw to accept the consent agenda. Seconded by Mrs. Devine. Motion unanimously passed.
REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT:
Celebration kudos were shared for:
Students Isaac Cray, Cora Bebo, Sophie Garrity, Isabella Pino, and Kinsley Bellows who read their essays at the Memorial Day Celebration unveiling of the 5 medal of honor recipients.
High school music concert, choir, concert and jazz band who received superior ratings for their performances at The Music in the Parks Festivals. Chapman band received rating of excellent and Chapman singers earned 1st place.
Congratulations were expressed to all musicians for their talents and accomplishments.
Sports:
-Unified Track was honored with the sportsmanship award at the MIAA Unified Track and Field State Competition
-Boys Volleyball upset Wellesley in the first round but lost in the 2nd to Lexington
-Girls Track finished 6th in their division
-Boys Baseball lost in the 1st round to Leominster
-Girls Softball beat Beverly but lost to top seed Taunton
-Boys/Girls Lacrosse and Girls Rugby upcoming
-Boys Rugby competing at BC High School
Congratulations to all athletes for a great season and year of sports.
Fall athletics registration is open on the website through Arbiter.
Superintendent Curtin recapped the South Shore Educational Collaborative meetings where she is a member of the board. Topics included: settling of union contracts, closing of the Randolph Mini Campus and combining South Shore High and Careers programs.
Our State Senator O’Connor and Representative Murphy honored the Robotics Team at the Statehouse today.
SCHOOL COMMITTEE SUB-COMMITTEE REPORT
Members attend other meetings outside of school committee days. Updates of other committees:
a. Budget Sub-Committee - Danielle Graziano
Next meeting will be 6/25/25. Town Council will vote the budget on 6/16/25 and school committee will vote on the final budget on 6/26/25.
b. Collective Bargaining Sub-Committee - Rebecca Sherlock-Shangraw
Negotiations with SEIU cafeteria workers are going well and will be meeting next week. Mrs. Nardone, Mr. Scott and Dr. Sherlock-Shangraw are on the negotiating committee.
c. Policy Sub-Committee - Dana Scott

d. Athletics Sub-Committee - Rebecca Sherlock-Shangraw & Mary-Ellen Devine

OLD BUSINESS
a. WHS Student Handbook-Third Reading-Ms. Northup & Ms. Bonner
The committee expressed their opposition to the buyback program for attendance failure and shared their concern for accountability. It was shared that a possible pilot program could be introduced to the committee at a later date to gather data regarding affected students. High School Administration did speak with School and Parent Councils previously.
Suggestion was made to add WPD before ‘Memorandum of Agreement’ on page 18.
Motion by Mrs. Curran to approve the Weymouth High School Program of Studies with the exception of the addition of the Buy Back Program for Attendance Failure. Motion seconded by Mrs. Devine and passed unanimously.
b. Policy BEDH-Public Comment at School Committee Meetings-Second Reading
With feedback from the last meeting and discussion with legal Mr. Scott shared the new language for #2: ‘In order to protect the privacy of students and staff, comments and complaints either directly or indirectly regarding specific students or school personnel, apart from the Superintendent, are generally prohibited.’ Committee consensus reached to remove the word ‘generally’. It was stated that this language explains the purpose of this policy point.
Motion by Mrs. Curran and seconded by Mrs. Devine to accept policy BEDH-Public Comment at School Committee Meetings as verbally amended at tonight's meeting. Motion passed unanimously.
NEW BUSINESS
a. Vote for Superintendent to participate on the Board of South Shore Educational Collaborative, effective July 1, 2025 (action requested)
Motion by Dr. Sherlock-Shangraw to approve the Superintendent to serve on the Board of South Shore Educational Collaborative, effective July 1, 2025. Seconded by Mrs. Devine. Motion passed unanimously.
b. SEPAC EOY presentation-Ms. Ferreira & Ms. O’Hara
The annual review (attached to these minutes) was presented. Topics included: officers of the board, community partner presentations and collaborations, family supports, Unified arts, Special Olympics, Student Services Administration meetings, recognitions, hosted events and outreach as well as goals.
The committee expressed their thanks and appreciation to SEPAC for their involvement and support.
c. Athletics Sponsorship Program Update-Ms. Kelly Powers
The new program (attached to these minutes) was reviewed. The program will be launched Summer 2025 with 5 sponsorship levels ($200-$5000) of differing incentives for banner display at WHS Turf, Gym, Baseball & Softball fields, Adams & Chapman Gyms. Program will be managed by athletics, business office, community liaison, and maintenance. Existing contact lists, local businesses/partnerships, email blasts, and Sunday messages will be used to announce the program and opportunities for sponsorship. The program will run on a school year cycle.
Funds collected will be deposited into a district revolving account for use deemed by the office of the Superintendent. Sponsors may wish to allocate where their sponsorship donation will be used. It was clarified that money received from the sponsorship program will not be used to support athletic booster programs.
The committee expressed their anticipation and excitement for this program and hope of community engagement.
PUBLIC COMMENT
In accordance with Policy BEDH.
-Students Liliana Reyes, Ellie McCarthy, Annabeth Masara & Nadia Alicia representing other students-Molly Farrell, Mia Gavin, Michaela Charles, Nash Baxter, Alexa Perry, Lila Hardy, Brianna Smith, Tracey Tran, Hugo Gaieguth, Coop McCarthty, Alvin Manko, Josephine Campo, and Theresa Connor- Spoke in support of a reversal of the removal of the WHS Choral/Band/Concert/Choir Director. It was shared that the Director inspired students and created a safe and supportive space with a sense of community that developed students confidence and talent. Opinion was expressed that the MWC choral director may not have the time to devote to WHS students.
The committee commended the students for attending and voicing their comments and suggested reaching out to the building principal.

The Meeting adjourned at 8:15pm on the motion by Dr. Sherlock-Shangraw and seconded by Mrs. Devine. Motion passed unanimously.
