Weymouth School Committee: Athletics Sub-Committee Meeting

Attendees: Mel Curtin, Superintendent Brian Smith, Assistant Superintendent Kelly Powers, Assistant to Superintendent Curtin Mary-Ellen Devine, Weymouth School Committee Rebecca Shangraw, Weymouth School Committee Rob O’Leary, Athletic Director Karen Monahan, WHS Principal

The meeting was called to order at 3:06pm.

1. Hiring Procedure for Game Workers

Mr. O’Leary reported that a new procedure for hiring game workers has been established in collaboration with Human Resources. This process aims to streamline hiring and ensure transparency. Workers will be identified by lanyards.

Mr. O’Leary provided clarification regarding the “administrator” game worker position, outlining its responsibilities, explaining how it differs from other game worker roles, and highlighting the teams for which a game “administrator” is required.

New trainer will be starting July 1, 2025.

3. Booster Procedure Guidelines

Plans were discussed for an upcoming meeting with booster representatives scheduled for August 20, 2025 (Wednesday evening). In addition, the group discussed a dedicated booster section on the athletics website to improve communication and collaboration between the Athletics Department and WPS booster groups.

4. Softball Scoreboard Update

The installation of the new softball scoreboard is pending. The delay is due to awaiting a meter from National Grid.

5. Athletics Website Preview

Ms. Powers shared a preview of the new draft Athletics website, which is scheduled to launch on June 17.

6. Final Athletics Participation Summary for 2024–2025 (attach Powerpoint)

  • WHS hosted over 500 athletic events during the academic year.
  • There was a 2% increase in filled roster spots compared to the 2023–2024 school year.
  • A total of 447 athletic bus trips were completed.
  • A review of athletic expenses and gate receipts for the past academic year was presented.

7. Athletics Sponsorship Banners

Parameters and expectations around the athletics sponsorship banner program were clarified and discussed.
