Policy Sub-Committee MINUTES
Tuesday, April 8, 2025
Location: Adams Library Conference Room
89 Middle St.

Members in Attendance: Dana Scott, Kathy Curran, Mary-Ellen Devine

Also Present: Melanie Curtin, Superintendent

6:00 P.M. - Meeting called to order

I. Committee Member Dana Scott shared notes from his meeting with District legal and Superintendent Curtin regarding proposed changes to the BEDH Public Comment Policy. Committee Member Devine as well as Member Curran expressed the need to ensure that somewhere in the Policy Manual there should be a procedure for residents to get an item on the agenda, and to have that section noted in the agenda.

The members further reviewed and discussed the legal recommendations to their edits and agreed to proceed to submit the legal approved edits to the full committee for first reading at the May 1 School Committee Meeting.

II. Public Comment: Weymouth Resident Gustavo Perez expressed his satisfaction with many of the edits made to the policy, but that he did have some concern that perhaps there should be some limitations on people speaking to subjects not on the agenda. It was explained that the legal team noted the committee can’t limit public comment to items on agenda, however he recommended finding a way to have some guardrails on that policy in the future to ensure speakers don’t derail a public business meeting.

III. Superintendent Curtin announced that the WHS and Chapman would be presenting their respective AI policies at the next full Committee Meeting as part of the handbook presentations.
