MEETING MINUTES

Members In Attendance: Tracey Nardone, Interim Chair; Carrie Palazzo, Secretary; Kathy Curran, Rebecca Sherlock-Shangraw; Steven Buccigross

Members Absent: Mayor Hedlund

Also Present: Robert Wargo, Superintendent; Brian Smith, Assistant Superintendent; Melanie Curtin, Assistant Superintendent

The meeting began at 6:02pm

Dr. Sherlock-Shangraw moved to enter into executive session;
Pursuant to M.G.L. Chapter 30A, Section 21(a)(8) to preliminarily consider applicants for appointment to the open School Committee seat.
Motion seconded by Ms. Palazzo. Roll call vote. Passed unanimously.

The meeting wascalled to order at 7:01pm

The chair informed that the meeting is being recorded and available on WETC.

Mrs. Nardone led in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Consent Agenda:
The Consent agenda included:

  • Warrant 46 - 2023 in the amount of $507,544.52. Dated 5/15/23
  • Budget Sub Minutes: 5/10/23
  • RegularMinutes: 5/11/23
  • ExecutiveSession Minutes: 5/11/23

Motion by Dr. Sherlock-Shangraw to accept the consent agenda. Seconded by Ms. Palazzo. Motion passed unanimously.

Report of the Superintendent:
The Superintendent shared past events as well as upcoming ones.

The Memorial Garden dedication was May 25, 2023 Thanks and appreciation for their efforts were expressed to Mr. Amoroso, Ms. Pitts, and Mr. Ricardo.  

38 students from all backgrounds and 9 different communities received their Weymouth Evening High School diploma. The Superintendent expressed his congratulations and also his thanks to Ms. Prendergast.

2 school committee members visited and toured Chapman and WHS the previous week. Discussions were had with the Family Engagement and Wrap Around center. Instructional rounds finished at Chapman. Thanks were shared to Principal Meehan and Dolan for hosting as well as teachers Mr. Hickey, Ms. Hicks, and Mr. Pelish.

A successful well attended International Night was held last week.

Memorial day celebration at Wess will be May 26 at 10:30am.

Legally Blonde will be next weekend at Chapman.

Track and Field kudos went out to Coach Mike Miller and student athletes: Brandon Riley, Justin Riley, Colin Gaugen, David Manfredi, Lucia Carvahlo, Joey Baker, Aisley Webber.

Scholarship award night is being held this evening, May 25, 2023 .

Chair Nardone expressed concern capacity for entrants to Champions and shared that JECC aftercare may be a possibility. The Superintendent will look into.

‘Kindergarten Here I Come’ was on June 24 and was very well attended. Thanks was expressed to Principal Perez. A suggestion was made for families to know about teacher assignments before the event.

Recognition was given for a CTE initiative grant where 10 recipients received automotive certificates this past week..

NEW BUSINESS

a. Fee Cycle

Assistant Superintendent Smith reviewed the proposed fees noting that the district works hard to keep increases as low as possible. He expressed his concerns for the athletics fees and requested more clarity and suggested that they be discussed at the next budget sub meeting on June 7.

It was confirmed that the proposed fees are posted online.

Motion by Dr. Sherlock-Shangraw to approve the proposed fees as presented with the exception of the athletics fees to be voted on at a future meeting. Seconded by Ms. Palazzo. Motion carried unanimously.

OLD BUSINESS

a. Policy KCD- Second Reading
There have been no changes since the first reading.

Public Comment:
There was none

Motion by Dr. Sherlock-Shangraw to combine the 2nd and 3rd reading of Policy KCD. Seconded by Mr. Buccigross. Motion carried.

Motion by Dr. Sherlock-Shangraw to accept Policy KCD. Seconded by Ms. Palazzo. Motion passed.

b. Policy JLDD- Life Threatening Allergies- Third Reading
Assistant Superintendent Curtin clarified that field trips outside of the school day have substitute nurses and students will have to supply their own medication. It was suggested to add this procedure to the district handbook. Information regarding medications will also be sent home in f ield trip notifications.

Motion by Dr. Sherlock-Shangraw to approve Policy JLDD-Life threatening allergies with the recommendation of adding the procedure to the district handbook. Seconded by Ms. Palazzo. Motion passed.

c. Policy Section D- Third Reading
Dr. Sherlock-Shangraw informed that there is only change since the last reading; to DGA amending the word “Will’ to May’

Motion by Dr. Sherlock-Shangraw to accept Policy D. Seconded by Ms. Palazzo. Motion passed.

d. Update andstatus of Abigail Adams and Johnson- Assistant Superintendent Smith
Assistant Superintendent Smith summarized the meeting of May 10. Final plans for flooring and timelines, as well as bid deadlines in June were highlighted. Laminate vinyl tiles will be in classrooms and hallways. For clearing out Adams a surplus and inventory memo will be sent to School Committee. The next meeting will be on June 6, 2023 at 3:30pm.

Student Senate
Freshman Josephine and Junior Brook Lanahan present an update (attached to these minutes)on WHShappenings. Topics included: Endof Year events, CTE, WALC, Clubs and Extracurricular, Asian Student Alliance, and Class Council news.

Gifts were presented to senior students. The students gave notebooks with handwritten notes to members.
