Dear Weymouth School Community,
I am Kathleen Smith the Superintendent of Weymouth Public Schools. I am honored and excited to serve as your Superintendent. I would like to thank Mayor Hedlund and the School Committee for their careful consideration and support. I look forward to working together in the upcoming months.
I would like to take this opportunity to tell you a little bit about myself. I have been married for almost 40 years to Gerry Smith, a long-time educator, and we have two adult daughters. I grew up in the South Shore and was raised in a family that valued public service. My father was the President of the Professional Firefighters of Massachusetts, and a proud public servant. His commitment to helping others served as a foundation for who I am today.
I began my career as an educator in Brockton and continued to work for Brockton Public Schools for 42 years. I taught many grade levels, was involved with extracurricular programs, was the Director of Brockton Community Schools, and held various administrative positions. I was extremely proud to lead the district as Superintendent where I both raised my family and began my career. I retired from Brockton in 2019 and served last school year as the Interim Superintendent of Salem Public Schools.
While I was an educator in Brockton, I earned my law degree, and had a unique opportunity to work with boutique labor law firms. My background in labor law has been exceptionally useful establishing and maintaining positive relationships in the workplace.
Today’s circumstances are unlike anything I’ve seen in my career. Information is constantly evolving, conditions change quickly, and communication is more important than ever before. Without a doubt, this has created challenges. As your Superintendent, I am up for the challenge.
In my short time here thus far one thing has become abundantly clear—Weymouth Public Schools are filled with capable administrators, talented teachers, skilled support staff, and determined students. Outside the school buildings the district is surrounded by supportive parents, grandparents, elected officials, and community members ready to work together to navigate through challenging times and circumstances. As we continue to adapt to constantly changing conditions it is essential we work together, remain patient, and willing to compromise to make planning for the future a success.
Like any new endeavor, it is my goal to leave this district better than I found it. I will be focused on being a communicator, a collaborator, a good listener and a great leader. I will work with elected officials, executive leadership, all staff, students and their families to ensure we are moving Weymouth Public Schools forward.
Above all else, I am committed to keeping our students and their families safe, while providing every student with the best education possible. I am eager to visit our schools and hear from students, staff and families as we continue to plan for the future. I will be hosting opportunities to connect both virtually and safely in-person in the coming months. I will be inviting members of our school community to join me and share their valuable feedback. In the meantime, if you have any questions, suggestions or concerns please feel free to contact me.
