CONSOLIDATED THIRD TERM REPORT 2017

         Art, Music and Physical Education

GRADE ONE

ART  -  Mrs. Johnson

Grade One - Students in grade one enjoyed sponge printing inspired by the book One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, and Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss. The Elements of Art were explored using line, color, shape and texture in many of the student art lessons. Art appreciation included famous artists Claude Monet and Paul Gauguin. Artist author Thomas Locker inspired drawings of the Violet Tree. Ask your child the colors of the sunset! Students learned to draw the human figure in proportion and will continue to practice in years ahead. Symmetry was explored connecting math and the visual arts culminating with painted butterflies. Your young artists learned to draw a landscape using the Museum of Fine Arts landscape booklets. Outdoor drawing from nature was a perfect ending to a wonderful year of visual art

MUSIC -  Ms. Abraham

Students in grade 1 spent the majority of the third term preparing for their Spring concert, “Rock Through the Years”, which took place on June 9th. This show included music from the 1950’s through 2000’s, and gave students the opportunity to learn many classical rock and roll hits, including “Yakety Yak”, “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”, and “Old Time Rock and Roll”. After their concert, students completed concert reflections to review how they had grown as musicians over the past term. The last few weeks of the school year were spent reviewing topics in music theory, such as note names and values, to prepare students for second grade music. PHYSICAL EDUCATION  -  Mrs. Steverman  

During term 3, grade 1 students continued to work on several skills through organized games and team sports.  Grade 1 students learned how to play floor hockey and kickball.  They had the opportunity to use the ropes to utilize their upper body strength through climbing or just enjoy swinging on the rope.  They continued to work on skills such as jump roping, hula hooping, throwing and catching and bowling through various station lessons.

GRADE TWO

ART  -  Mrs. Johnson

    Grade Two - Students in grade two enjoyed painting imaginary animals inspired by author/artist Eric Carle. The Elements of art were explored using line, color, shape and texture. Sponge printing inspired by Dr. Seuss's book One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish was a highlight of the term. Your children have wonderful imaginations and it shows in their artwork. Students learned to draw the human figure in proportion and their drawing skills improve every year! Art appreciation units included Claude Monet, Paul Gauguin and Thomas Locker. Symmetry was explored with the integration of visual art and math while painting butterflies. Your children learned to draw landscapes with the Museum of Fine Arts booklets of lessons on landscapes. They enjoyed outdoor drawing from nature as a perfect ending to a wonderful year in art!

They learned to games to enhance their spatial awareness and throwing for accuracy. They also learned how to play floor hockey and continued to learn how to play kickball.  They worked on several skills such as; jump roping, hula hooping, scooter board play, and throwing & catching. They learned the importance of good sportsmanship, teamwork and cooperation during physical education lessons.

GRADE THREE

ART  -  Mrs. Johnson

Grade Three - Students in grade three enjoyed sponge printing inspired by Dr. Seuss's book One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. The Elements of Art were explored using line, color, shape and space in many of their art lessons. The children practiced drawing the human figure in proportion and their drawing skills improve every year. Artist Thomas Locker inspired the Violet Tree drawings with beautiful sunsets. Integrating math and art with colorful polygon pictures and painted butterflies is always a highlight of the season. Connecting health and art included Favorite Healthy Food artwork! Art appreciation included Vincent Van Gogh while perspective was explored inspired by The Bedroom at Arles. Outdoor drawing from nature was a perfect ending to a wonderful year in art.          

MUSIC  -  Ms. Abraham

Throughout the third term, students in grade 3 continued their practice on the recorder, through the use of their “Recorder Karate” booklet and learning the song “America the Beautiful”. Musical growth over the course of the term included learning to play the notes B-A-G-E-D-C’ and D’ on the recorder, and strengthening treble clef reading skills.  Students also took time to reflect on their recorder experience and prepare for fourth grade music, in which they will continue with their recorder practice. Students are expected to bring their recorder home for the summer and keep it in a safe place, as it will need to return to school in September for music class. Should a recorder be lost over the course of summer vacation, students will be expected to purchase a new recorder through the school upon returning to school in September. PHYSICAL EDUCATION   -  Mrs. Steverman

During term 3, grade 3 students are demonstrating proficiency in hand/eye coordination and spatial awareness.  They played team sports such as; kickball, bombardment, and floor hockey.

They used their upper body strength to climb the ropes and swing on the ropes. Communication, teamwork and good sportsmanship play a big role in physical education activities.

GRADE FOUR

ART – Mrs. Johnson

 Grade Four - Students in grade four enjoyed sponge printing inspired by Dr. Seuss's book One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. Your children have wonderful imaginations and it show in their artwork. Art appreciation units included Georgia O'Keefe larger than life painted flowers. Perspective was explored and inspired by Vincent Van Gogh's painting Bedroom at Arles. Elements of Art were explored using line, color, shape and space. Integration of math and the visual arts culminated with colorful polygon drawings and painted butterflies. Outdoor drawing from nature was a perfect ending to a wonderful year in art!

MUSIC – Ms. Abraham

Students in grade 4 kicked off the third term with “Music in Our Schools Month”. This included preparing a district-wide performance for “Weymouth’s Got Talent”, as well as reflection during music class on the various ways that music impacts our lives. Throughout the third term, students continued practice on the recorder through performance in the “Recorder Karate” booklets and work on “America the Beautiful “. The end of the school year provided the opportunity to discuss and prepare for music opportunities in the fifth grade, including band and chorus. I hope you have a fantastic summer break and continue to enjoy music as you move on to middle school!

PHYSICAL EDUCATION  -  Mrs. Steverman

During term 3, grade 4 students played several teams sports such as; floor hockey, basketball, kickball, and bombardment.  Good sportsmanship, teamwork and communication skills are stressed as students apply the skills they are learning to play games and team sports. They used their upper body strength and determination to climb and swing on the ropes.  All fourth grade students should have a high level of confidence in the rules and skills they have learned.
